Education is Life

At the St. Dominic Primary School, we believe, as John Dewey (1859-1952) the American education reformer, that ‘Education is not a preparation for life, education is life itself.’

Inspired by this, our motto `Excellence in Education’ is a resounding echo of this very purpose and to which every St. Dominic Primary School student is deeply devoted.

21st Century Skills

Real-life application of knowledge, 21st Century Skills, Project based approach has been the hallmark of the education revolution at the St. Dominic Primary School.

Our PBS values namely: being safe, being independent and being responsible echoes at St. Dominic Primary School and has helped our students evolve into caring and achieving members of society.

These values instilled will blossom them into responsible and global citizens of the revolutionizing world. We have seen ample evidence of cross-culture exposure and internationalism in classrooms and outside. Our students have proudly represented us at various platforms such as spoken words competition, spelling bee, swimming and running events.

On these platforms, our staff works hard along with the parents and is always present to applaud our students in all their activities. We are always with, behind and around them.

St. Dominic Primary School rejoices, celebrates the success of its students and has created a niche for itself in the field of education.

Learner-centric education

The staff of St. Dominic Primary School brings together an exceptional learning community. Our curriculum and practices, based on learner-centric education, strives to build independent, responsible and global citizens. Therefore, we will impart world-class education through the best use of new resources, developing young minds to think, question and create.

Our school aims to fuse the strong cultural fundamentals of society with advanced learning tools acquired from the world over giving education an exciting and dynamic direction.

As we open our doors to each new generation of students, expectations run high as we believe that our students will grow into the stars in our skies.

Every day, every year, we scale new heights, never standing still.

School Coordinator

Ms. Shanirah Illidge

Taking the interest of the future of St. Maarten into consideration, Mr. Voges, superintendent of the Foundation of Catholic Education, proposed to establish a new school with English as the language of instruction in all groups of the school. This was accepted by the School board in their meeting of June 1987.

School History

In June of 1987, the contract for the construction of a new elementary school was signed. Initially, the building was supposed to be the new facility for the Sister Magda Primary School, but the new building would have been too small from the beginning for the Sister Magda School. Taking the interest of the future of St. Maarten into consideration, Mr. Voges, superintendent of the Foundation of Catholic Education, proposed to establish a new school with English as the language of instruction in all groups of the school. This was accepted by the School board in their meeting of June 1987. It was also brought forward in a school board meeting to name the school after the patron saint of the Dominican Sisters, who were the pioneers of Catholic Education in St. Maarten. As it was a good idea it was decided that the new school would be called St. Dominic Primary School.

The first principle of the new St. Dominic Primary school was Mr. Frans van Veghel. As the school progressed the need for English Secondary Education became more and more urgent. The St. Dominic Secondary school was founded. Mrs. Judith Halley was appointed principal for both schools. After seeing the different nature of the two schools, it was decided to split the management of both schools. Mrs. Jane Buncamper became principal of the High school; Mrs. Halley could fully concentrate on the primary section. In 2004 Mrs. Althea Barry took over from Mrs. Halley. The school expanded and became one of the leading schools with English as the language of instruction. In 2013 Mrs. Janice Mussington took over from Mrs. Barry. An ambitious plan was started to expand the school with extra classes. In August 2014 the expansion was completed. The school could occupy the newly constructed rooms.
